How this summary is made

Every number comes from daily quotes that this site's server fetches from Yahoo Finance and shares among all visitors. The sentences put those numbers into fixed templates; they never give reasons for a move or say where prices are heading. While a market is open the summary shows the value at that time; when it is closed it shows the last session's close with its date. On weekends and holidays the most recent session's close stays in place.

What this tool does

One page with the latest values, daily changes and 52-week positions for KOSPI, KOSDAQ, the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite, Dow Jones, Nikkei 225, USD/KRW, KRW per 100 yen, gold and WTI crude futures, the US 10-year Treasury yield, Bitcoin and Ether, written up as plain sentences. It also lists the biggest gainers and decliners among the 50 Korean and 50 US stocks in the Large-Cap Scanner. The sentences are built from the numbers with fixed templates, so they never give reasons for a move or a forecast.

How it is calculated

Every number comes from one year of daily quotes that this site's server fetches from Yahoo Finance and shares among all visitors (5-minute server cache). The server keeps a summary built from those quotes and rebuilds it in the background on the first request after 5 minutes. While the tab is visible the page swaps in the new summary every 5 minutes. The daily change is the latest value (the close, once the market has closed) minus the previous session's close, and the percentage divides that by the previous close. KRW per 100 yen is the per-yen quote times 100; the US 10-year value is the annual yield in percent, so its change is given in basis points (0.01 percentage point). The 52-week position puts the lowest daily low in the 365 days up to the last bar at 0% and the highest daily high at 100%. While a market is open the value at that time is shown; when it is closed, the last session's close with the exchange's local date. FX and crypto trade almost around the clock, so they are labeled with a time, and the crypto previous close is the daily bar that ends at 00:00 UTC. Large-cap movers count only stocks with a quote from the latest session and list five each by percentage change.

Things to know

Frequently asked questions

Who writes the summary?

Nobody writes it by hand. The server puts the quote numbers into fixed sentence templates automatically, so there are no reasons for a move, no forecasts and no buy or sell opinions.

How often does it update?

The server's daily-quote cache lasts 5 minutes, so the summary is rebuilt every 5 minutes. With the page open, it fetches the new summary every 5 minutes while the tab is visible, pauses when the tab is hidden and fetches once as soon as it is visible again.

What is shown on weekends?

When a market is closed, the most recent session's close is shown with its date — on Saturday, Friday's close; on a Korean holiday, the previous session's KOSPI close. FX shows Friday's last quote with its time.

What is the 52-week position?

It shows where the latest value sits if the lowest low of the past year of daily bars is 0% and the highest high is 100%. An index with a low of 100 and a high of 200 at 150 is at 50%. High or low does not mean good or bad.

Which stocks are the movers picked from?

From the list of 50 Korean and 50 US stocks that the Large-Cap Scanner uses. Only stocks with a quote from the latest session are counted, and if some could not be loaded this time the page says how many.

For information only, not investment advice. Prices come from Yahoo Finance via our server and may be delayed 15–20 minutes or more depending on the exchange, or interrupted. The sentences are generated automatically from the numbers and are neither explanations nor forecasts.
